5G is the next generation of wireless network technology that aims to change people’s lifestyles and ways of working. It will be able to handle faster and more connected devices than the existing 4G LTE network, with upgrades to create a new wave of technology products. 5G networks began to expand in the US and around the world in 2018 and are still in their infancy, but experts say the potential is enormous.

Importance of 5G network

Companies are competing to get the fastest or largest 5G networks. Countries are vying to be the first to use fully functional, nationwide 5G. This is because the benefits of new technology not only provide consumers with fuel for new technologies that can be transformed into business, infrastructure and security applications.

What are the benefits of 5G network?

Most of the assumptions around 5G related to speed. But there are other privileges as well.

  • 5G has a larger bandwidth, which means it can handle more connected devices than previous networks. This means that when you are in a densely populated area there is no more local service.
  • It will also enable even more connected devices such as smart toothbrushes and self-driving cars.
  • 5G will reduce delays the time it takes for a mobile phone (or other connected devices) to request and receive a response from a client almost zero.
  • It also makes communication with cloud platforms (think Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure) faster and easier.

How does it work?

With 5G, streaming over new radio frequencies will require updating radios and other devices on cell towers.

Depending on the type of assets a wireless carrier has, there are three different ways to build a 5G network:

  • Low bandwidth (wide coverage area but about 20% faster than 4G), high band network (super fast but not fast) and struggles to move through hard surfaces) and the middle belt network (balances speed and coverage).
  • The carriers that make up super-fast 5G networks have to install tons of small cell sites – about the size of pizza boxes for light poles, walls, or towers, often in relatively small proximity to each other. For that reason, super-fast networks are largely deployed out of town.
  •  In the end, most U.S. carriers have a mix of different types of networks that can provide broad coverage and faster speeds.

How fast 5G network?

According to GSMA, the wireless industry group, the fastest 5G networks expected to be at least 10 times faster than 4G LTE.

Some experts say that in the end, they can be 100 times faster. It’s fast enough to download a 10-hour movie in less than 10 seconds, with about 7 minutes with 4G. The actual download speed depends on a number of factors, including location and network traffic.

Usage of 5G network      

Customers must have 5G enabled devices to connect to a 5G network and reap the benefits. Samsung, Motorola, Huawei, LG, One Plus, and other device manufacturers have released 5G phones.

Many expect Apple to release a 5G iPhone by the end of 2020. Manufacturers and some companies, including the NFL, are working with carriers to set up private 5G networks that can reap the benefits without rolling across the country.

Are there drawbacks?

Industrial trade group GSMA estimates that 5G will make up about half of the mobile connections by 2025 (the rest will be older technologies such as 4G and 3G) significant use of 5G will take years.

There is concern among regulators and others about the security of 5G, especially as critical technologies such as self-driving cars and healthcare will build on the network.

The Future of 5G

Now, after years of promises and years of waiting, 5G is finally coming into the pockets of consumers. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission has held several auctions for the 5G spectrum.

 In August, the Trump administration said it would sell more parts of the mid-band spectrum for 5G adoption. 5G more than mobile phones, 5G technologies should be able to serve many devices in real-time. This is especially important as the number of cars, environmental sensors, thermostats and other devices connected to the Internet accelerates in the coming years.

For example:

 5G allows automatic cars to communicate not only with each other, but also in near future it can communicate with roads, lights, parking meters and signals.

The short delay in 5G means that 5G can perform remote surgery and allow physicians in one location to operate network operated surgical instruments thousands of miles from the network.

Medical providers can rely on 5G for faster transmission of high resolution images for use in diagnostics and treatment.

Manufacturers can use 5G networks to remotely monitor production lines and maintain video feeds in their factories. Some companies license their own 5G spectrum and replace their Wi-Fi networks with private 5G networks. Although 5G is not universally available, the telecom industry is already looking forward to the next big thing, wireless spectrum 100 GHz: 6G technology that will benefit areas over and above.
